Bars may be added for additional acts of gallantry. Since August 1st, 1918, it has, like the D.S.O., been awarded for "services in action" only.

ARRAS, 17th March, 1917. During a raid on the enemy's trenches he handled his men in
a most gallant manner, and was largely responsible for the success of the raid. Later he assisted in rescuing a wounded officer.
