Medal & Mortality index
The Military Cross was instituted as a Decoration on December 28th, 1914, to
reward Distinguished Services rendered by Officers of certain ranks in the army
in time of war. Bars may be added for additional acts of gallantry. Since August
1st, 1918, it has, like the D.S.O., been awarded for "services in action" only.
BEAL, Capt. Leonard Frank ... ... ... ... ... ... 2/Bedford
POZIERES, 7th to 9th August, 1916. For conspicuous gallantry during operations.
He consolidated his position under heavy shell and machine-gun fire, and got
into touch with the troops on his right. In spite of shell-fire he rendered a
most useful report with map. He had previously done fine work in consolidating
and holding a position in a wood under very difficult circumstances.
