The Military Cross was instituted as a Decoration on December 28th, 1914, to
reward Distinguished Services rendered by Officers of certain ranks in the army
in time of war. Bars may be added for additional acts of gallantry. Since August
1st, 1918, it has, like the D.S.O., been awarded for "services in action" only.
BROATCH, 2/Lieutenant Percy ... ... ... ... 32/Northumberland Fusiliers
E. of HARGICODRT, 26th August, 1917. He led his men to attack and got into
action on the final objective in a very short time. Although half his men became
casualties he kept his mortars in action and supplied with ammunition, until
relieved three days later. It was only owing to his brilliant leadership and
cheerful example that the mortars were kept in action.
