The Military Cross was instituted as a Decoration on December 28th, 1914, to
reward Distinguished Services rendered by Officers of certain ranks in the army
in time of war. Bars may be added for additional acts of gallantry. Since August
1st, 1918, it has, like the D.S.O., been awarded for "services in action" only.
EVANS, 2/Lieutenant Thomas Kelvin ... ... ... 3/Northumberland Fusiliers
VIEUX BERQUIN, 7th August, 1918. He made a reconnaissance in advance of a patrol
which was held up by machine-gun fire from two points. By working close up he
was able to locate the exact position of these guns. He further located two
machine-gun posts further behind, from which our men were being sniped, and
again two more posts from which a machine gun was captured. He was out for
nearly four hours, most of the time behind the enemy's posts. He displayed
conspicuous gallantry and skill.
