Medal & Mortality index
The Military Cross was instituted as a Decoration on December 28th, 1914, to
reward Distinguished Services rendered by Officers of certain ranks in the army
in time of war. Bars may be added for additional acts of gallantry. Since August
1st, 1918, it has, like the D.S.O., been awarded for "services in action" only.
FOORD, 2/Lieutenant Basil Arthur ... ... ... ... ... 7/ London
Near ARRAS, 28/29 May, 1918. For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty
while in charge of the right attacking platoon in a raid on the hostile lines.
He displayed a fine fighting spirit and powers of leadership, personally
accounting for many of the enemy.
When the time for withdrawal came, he remained behind to assure himself that all
his casualties were brought back, assisting to carry some of them himself. He
was the only surviving officer, and his gallant behaviour throughout was a fine
example to all ranks.
