Bars may be added for additional acts of gallantry. Since August 1st, 1918, it has, like the D.S.O., been awarded for "services in action" only.

N. of VERTAIN, 23rd October, 1918. For most conspicuous gallantry and initiative
during the operations. On reaching his objective he discovered a pocket of the enemy holding a sunken road. He rushed forward with one N.C.O. and killed two of the enemy and captured thirty. Six machine guns were found in the road, and but for his dash and courage a dangerous situation would have arisen.
