The Military Cross was instituted as a Decoration on December 28th, 1914, to
reward Distinguished Services rendered by Officers of certain ranks in the army
in time of war. Bars may be added for additional acts of gallantry. Since August
1st, 1918, it has, like the D.S.O., been awarded for "services in action" only.

GUN TRENCH, 30th September, 1915. For conspicuous gallantry when the Germans had
succeeded in entering Gun Trench and were bombing down it. It was largely owing
to the personal bravery and initiative of 2/Lieutenant Godfrey that their
advance was stopped.
He organised bombers, collected bombs and attacked the enemy, gaining some
ground. He was continuously fighting from 6.30 p.m. till 5 a.m. next day.
