Bars may be added for additional acts of gallantry. Since August 1st, 1918, it has, like the D.S.O., been awarded for "services in action" only.

He took command of a company when his company commander became a casualty and successfully led it to a new position which he consolidated. He brought in several wounded men from the front of the lines under heavy fire, and set a splendid example of coolness and courage to his men.
