Medal & Mortality index
The Military Cross was instituted as a Decoration on December 28th, 1914, to
reward Distinguished Services rendered by Officers of certain ranks in the army
in time of war. Bars may be added for additional acts of gallantry. Since August
1st, 1918, it has, like the D.S.O., been awarded for "services in action" only.
LORT, 2/Lieutenant William Vincent ... ... ... ... ... 7/London
ALBERT SECTOR and " No MAN'S LAND," July, 1918. For conspicuous gallantry and
ability in action. He and a N.C.O. went out to the help of a fighting patrol who
had suffered severe casualties. He promptly organised stretcher parties, and
made many journeys to and from the front line under heavy machine-gun fire,
himself unaided carrying one man 100 yards.
When all casualties were clear he twice attempted to rescue the Lewis gun, and
was wounded when nearly succeeding.
