The Military Cross was instituted as a Decoration on December 28th, 1914, to
reward Distinguished Services rendered by Officers of certain ranks in the army
in time of war. Bars may be added for additional acts of gallantry. Since August
1st, 1918, it has, like the D.S.O., been awarded for "services in action" only.
MAINGOT, Capt. Patrick Sherlock ... ... ... 9/East Surrey
S.E. of CAMBRAI, 9th October, 1918. For conspicuous good leadership and
gallantry when in command of a company. Again, on i6th October, during the
attack on HAUSSY, he manoeuvred his men splendidly, and took his objective in
spite of heavy opposition, with very few casualties. When the enemy
counter-attacked and practically surrounded him he extricated his men in a most
masterly manner. He showed marked courage throughout.
