The Military Cross was instituted as a Decoration on December 28th, 1914, to
reward Distinguished Services rendered by Officers of certain ranks in the army
in time of war. Bars may be added for additional acts of gallantry. Since August
1st, 1918, it has, like the D.S.O., been awarded for "services in action" only.

Edinburgh Gazette 30 July 1917
Temp 2nd Lieutenant Maurice Gregory Milsom, R Fus :
For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. When in command of a platoon he
showed the greatest gallantry in leading bombing attacks during which he took
many prisoners and drove strong parties of the enemy out of our trenches with
heavy loss. His courage and dash had a wonderful effect upon his men.
