The Military Cross was instituted as a Decoration on December 28th, 1914, to
reward Distinguished Services rendered by Officers of certain ranks in the army
in time of war. Bars may be added for additional acts of gallantry. Since August
1st, 1918, it has, like the D.S.O., been awarded for "services in action" only.
NICHOLLS, 2/Lieutenant Edward John ... ... ... ... 7/Royal Warwick
S.E. of POELCAPPELLE, 4th October, 1917. When the right flank of his company was
held up by heavy machine-gun fire during an advance, and the company commander
was killed, he took command and led an attack on the machine gun, which he
captured, putting the entire team out of action. He then led his men forward and
captured his objective, setting a splendid example of courage and determination.
