Medal & Mortality index
The Military Cross was instituted as a Decoration on December 28th, 1914, to
reward Distinguished Services rendered by Officers of certain ranks in the army
in time of war. Bars may be added for additional acts of gallantry. Since August
1st, 1918, it has, like the D.S.O., been awarded for "services in action" only.
OWEN, Lieut. Malcolm de Brissac ... ... ... ... ... 1/Hertford
S.E. of HAVRINCOURT, 18/19 September, 1918. For conspicuous gallantry and
devotion to duty. This officer was in command of the right front company when
the enemy broke in at two points, but, by skilful handling of the supporting
platoons, he stopped them from advancing further than the front line. He then
made a daring reconnaissance under heavy machine-gun fire, and, organising a
counter-attack, drove the enemy out again from one of the points. The next day
he counter-attacked the other point, and succeeded in completely restoring the
line.
