Medal & Mortality index
The Military Cross was instituted as a Decoration on December 28th, 1914, to
reward Distinguished Services rendered by Officers of certain ranks in the army
in time of war. Bars may be added for additional acts of gallantry. Since August
1st, 1918, it has, like the D.S.O., been awarded for "services in action" only.
POLL, Lieut. Dudley Erskine ... ... ... ... ... 24/London
ST. PIERRE VAAST WOOD, September 2nd, 1918. For most conspicuous gallantry and
initiative. Whilst on the ridge in front of VAUX WOOD he crawled over the open
to the rear to bring up reinforcements, although absolutely exposed to intense
rifle and machine-gun fire. He personally posted the reinforcements on the
exposed flank and thus relieved the danger of a flank attack against the
position on the ridge. Throughout the operations he set a fine example to all
ranks.
