Medal & Mortality index
The Military Cross was instituted as a Decoration on December 28th, 1914, to
reward Distinguished Services rendered by Officers of certain ranks in the army
in time of war. Bars may be added for additional acts of gallantry. Since August
1st, 1918, it has, like the D.S.O., been awarded for "services in action" only.
ROCHFORD, 2/Lieutenant John Robert ... ... ... ... 10/Royal Warwick
Near LOUPART WOOD, 25th March, 1918. For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to
duty in directing the fire of his company with the greatest coolness when the
troops on both flanks had withdrawn. His splendid example inspired his men to
hold on until the last possible moment, and in the final withdrawal he was again
conspicuous in handling his men to provide the necessary covering fire.
