Bars may be added for additional acts of gallantry. Since August 1st, 1918, it has, like the D.S.O., been awarded for "services in action" only.

Although a very junior officer he commanded his company with great courage and ability, and his resolution in the leading of a counter-attack was worthy of the utmost praise.
