The Military Cross was instituted as a Decoration on December 28th, 1914, to
reward Distinguished Services rendered by Officers of certain ranks in the army
in time of war. Bars may be added for additional acts of gallantry. Since August
1st, 1918, it has, like the D.S.O., been awarded for "services in action" only.
SALTER, Lieut. Carl Russell Colley ... ... ... ... 20/London
SHAB SALLAH, 29th December, 1917. During the attack, after his company commander
had become a casualty, he took charge of the company, which he reorganised under
heavy machine-gun and rifle fire, repulsed an attack on his flank, and
personally led a charge against the enemy on his front. His leadership, coolness
and initiative largely contributed to the success of the operations.
