Medal & Mortality index
The Military Cross was instituted as a Decoration on December 28th, 1914, to
reward Distinguished Services rendered by Officers of certain ranks in the army
in time of war. Bars may be added for additional acts of gallantry. Since August
1st, 1918, it has, like the D.S.O., been awarded for "services in action" only.
SAVAGE, 2/Lieutenant James Percival ... ... ... ... ... 13/London
JERUSALEM, December, 1917. For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. On
the enemy gaining a temporary footing on the right flank of the line he
immediately collected a few men and charged into the midst of the enemy, whom he
succeeded in holding in check until that section of the line was reorganised,
after which the enemy were completely repulsed. His gallantry and presence of
mind undoubtedly averted the possibility of critical developments.
