The Military Cross was instituted as a Decoration on December 28th, 1914, to
reward Distinguished Services rendered by Officers of certain ranks in the army
in time of war. Bars may be added for additional acts of gallantry. Since August
1st, 1918, it has, like the D.S.O., been awarded for "services in action" only.
SELFE, Capt. Arthur Edward Ferrour ... ... 1 /Artists : Coldstream Guards
PILKEM RIDGE, 31st July, 1917. For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty.
During an attack he displayed remarkable initiative and grasp of a difficult
situation in capturing his own objective as well as a strong point outside his
area which would have considerably held up the attack. On obtaining his
objective he quickly reorganised under heavy machine-gun fire, and throughout
this day and the following one kept his company going under the most adverse
circumstances by his splendid personal example.
