The Military Cross was instituted as a Decoration on December 28th, 1914, to
reward Distinguished Services rendered by Officers of certain ranks in the army
in time of war. Bars may be added for additional acts of gallantry. Since August
1st, 1918, it has, like the D.S.O., been awarded for "services in action" only.
SHILCOCK, 2/Lieutenant Harold Gordon ... ... ... 7/London (7/Middlesex)
BULLECOURT, 31st August, 1918. When his company commander was wounded shortly
after the attack commenced he took command, and led his men with gallantry and
resolution to their objective, where he held his position under difficult
conditions and against determined efforts of the enemy to outflank and penetrate
our line. His example of courage and able leadership largely contributed to the
success achieved.
