The Military Cross was instituted as a Decoration on December 28th, 1914, to
reward Distinguished Services rendered by Officers of certain ranks in the army
in time of war. Bars may be added for additional acts of gallantry. Since August
1st, 1918, it has, like the D.S.O., been awarded for "services in action" only.
SHORT, Capt. John Rodwell ... ... ... ... 13/ Yorkshire
Near VILLERS GUISLAIN, 14th March, 1917. Prior to the raid on the enemy trenches
he made several personal reconnaissances of the enemy's wire and positions, and
it was largely owing to his gallantry and fine leadership that the attack was
pressed home. The hostile trenches were entered, several of the enemy killed and
two prisoners captured, at a time when identifications were of incalculable
value. He had previously shown the greatest skill and judgment in organising,
equipping and training his men for the raid, for the undoubted success of which
he was largely responsible.
