SMITH, 2/Lieutenant Ernest Rees ... ... ... Motor Machine Gun Corps

Near LA VACQUERIE, 1st December, 1917. For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty.
During the defence of our position, by his splendid example of courage and coolness, he undoubtedly saved some of the guns of a neighbouring brigade and effectively checked the enemy's advance in that sector. After the guns had been got away he remained in defence of the positions. He sent in valuable information to the generals of two brigades, carried out machine-gun defence work, and greatly assisted in organising the infantry defence.
