The Military Cross was instituted as a Decoration on December 28th, 1914, to
reward Distinguished Services rendered by Officers of certain ranks in the army
in time of war. Bars may be added for additional acts of gallantry. Since August
1st, 1918, it has, like the D.S.O., been awarded for "services in action" only.

Near YPRES, 23rd September, 1917. For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to
duty. He was on his way to a forward post alone when he saw a party of six of
the enemy approaching. He covered them with his revolver and took them all
prisoners.

CROZAT CANAL, 21/22 March, 1918. For conspicuous gallantry and devotion in
action when he went forward with four scouts to locate the position of the
enemy. During the reconnaissance his four scouts were wounded, and it was only
by crawling under heavy fire that he was able to take back information of the
highest importance. His courage and determination were very marked.
