STONE, Capt. William Herbert ... ... ... ... 1/Royal Warwick

Near MERVILLE, 28th June, 1918. During an attack he led his company with conspicuous gallantry and great dash to the capture of their objective. He then took a party with a Lewis gun in pursuit of the retreating enemy, on whom he inflicted severe losses. Having destroyed a bridge over the river he consolidated a selected position well in advance of the objective, and
though badly wounded he continued to direct operations for some time. During all this time he was under heavy enemy machine-gun and sniping fire at short range.
