The Military Cross was instituted as a Decoration on December 28th, 1914, to
reward Distinguished Services rendered by Officers of certain ranks in the army
in time of war. Bars may be added for additional acts of gallantry. Since August
1st, 1918, it has, like the D.S.O., been awarded for "services in action" only.

BAZUEL, 18th October, 1918. In the attack he commanded a company in the leading
wave with conspicuous courage and skill. When the advance was held up by heavy
machine-gun fire he made a personal reconnaissance, and, gaining touch with a
company on the left, he gave orders to the remainder of the line to advance,
gaining the objective with few casualties. His company captured a complete
battery of 4 2-inch howitzers.
