Medal & Mortality index
The Military Cross was instituted as a Decoration on December 28th, 1914, to
reward Distinguished Services rendered by Officers of certain ranks in the army
in time of war. Bars may be added for additional acts of gallantry. Since August
1st, 1918, it has, like the D.S.O., been awarded for "services in action" only.
WATSON, 2/Lieutenant Arthur Vivian Cradock ... ... ... Machine Gun Corps
Near MASNIERES, 20th November, 1917. For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to
duty during an engagement. He brought up pack animals loaded with ammunition
close to the front line, and then led them forward under heavy fire to the
captured position. His daring and skilful work enabled the guns to be got into
action and maintain their fire for a much greater length of time than would
otherwise have been possible. Though he suffered casualties amongst his men and
animals, he delivered ammunition to all the guns and then returned and brought
up a second load.
