The Military Cross was instituted as a Decoration on December 28th, 1914, to
reward Distinguished Services rendered by Officers of certain ranks in the army
in time of war. Bars may be added for additional acts of gallantry. Since August
1st, 1918, it has, like the D.S.O., been awarded for "services in action" only.
WORNUM, 2/Lieutenant William Esmond ... ... ... ... ... R.G.A.
WESTOURTRE, 28th July, 1918. For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty.
This officer's battery came under heavy shell fire while he was on duty as
section commander, but by his coolness and determination he kept the guns in
action all night and the next day. On one occasion, one of his detachments
having suffered heavily, he personally acted as layer to one of the guns.
