The Military Cross was instituted as a Decoration on December 28th, 1914, to
reward Distinguished Services rendered by Officers of certain ranks in the army
in time of war. Bars may be added for additional acts of gallantry. Since August
1st, 1918, it has, like the D.S.O., been awarded for "services in action" only.

MILITARY CROSS :
BARRATT, Temp. Lt. Sidney Frederick, 30th Battalion., M.G. Corps.* For
conspicuous gallantry near Messines on 28th September 1918, in reconnoitring
forward with a patrol, until contact was made with the enemy, and in occupying
with his section an important tactical position. Throughout the operations he
handled his section in a bold and skilful manner, giving the most advantageous
support to the advancing infantry at all times. — Gazette, 1 February 1919.
