The Military Cross was instituted as a Decoration on December 28th, 1914, to
reward Distinguished Services rendered by Officers of certain ranks in the army
in time of war. Bars may be added for additional acts of gallantry. Since August
1st, 1918, it has, like the D.S.O., been awarded for "services in action" only.

BARTON, Capt. Maurice Holdsworth, R.A.M.C. (T.F.), attd. 5th Bn., Leic. R. ? For
conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty at Hohenzollern Redoubt on 13th
October 1915, in tending and bringing in wounded under fire. He also rallied and
sent forward men who had become scattered. This is not the first time that Capt.
Barton's bravery and good work have been brought to notice. — Gazette, 18
November 1915.
