MILITARY CROSS :
BATE, Capt. Edwyn Ernest Hope, London Regiment (T.F.). ? For conspicuous
gallantry and devotion to duty. Although wounded, he led his men to their
objective with great courage, keeping them together, and successfully resisting
severe counter-attacks, during which he was wounded for the second time. His
energy and fearlessness in organising and leading bombing attacks and generally
supervising his defences, under heavy fire of every description, were beyond all
praise. — Gazette, 17 September 1917.
