The Military Cross was instituted as a Decoration on December 28th, 1914, to
reward Distinguished Services rendered by Officers of certain ranks in the army
in time of war. Bars may be added for additional acts of gallantry. Since August
1st, 1918, it has, like the D.S.O., been awarded for "services in action" only.

BECKLY, Temp. 2nd Lt. William Edwin, R.E., attached. 447th (Northumbrian) Field.
Coy., R.E. (T.F.). ? For courage and initiative. Whilst on a reconnaissance on
the morning of 7th November 1918, at Monceau, he detected a burning fuse under a
bridge. He with his sergeant and corporal at once got down into the stream and
cut the fuse, of which only 12 inches remained to burn, and removed a number of
9-inch and 6-inch shells and a large quantity of explosive from the underside of
