Medal & Mortality index
The Military Cross was instituted as a Decoration on December 28th, 1914, to
reward Distinguished Services rendered by Officers of certain ranks in the army
in time of war. Bars may be added for additional acts of gallantry. Since August
1st, 1918, it has, like the D.S.O., been awarded for "services in action" only.

BUSBY, Temp. Lt. William Walter, 13th Bn., Essex R. ? For conspicuous gallantry
during a successful raid. He led his men with great dash into the enemy's
trenches and, after the withdrawal, remained for some time assisting to find and
bring in the wounded. — Gazette, zj July 19 16.
WILLIAM WALTER BUSBY. M.C. Captain Essex Regiment ? East London College
and Birkbeck College ? son of Mr. and Mrs. C. E. Busby of Forest Gate ? reported
missing believed killed at Beaumont Hamel on 13th November 191 6 ? buried in
Serre Road Cemetery No. 2.
