The Military Cross was instituted as a Decoration on December 28th, 1914, to
reward Distinguished Services rendered by Officers of certain ranks in the army
in time of war. Bars may be added for additional acts of gallantry. Since August
1st, 1918, it has, like the D.S.O., been awarded for "services in action" only.

CHISWELL, 2ND Lt. (Temp. Lt.) Henry Pettit, R.E. ? For conspicuous gallantry and
devotion to duty. This officer was in charge of a party which laid the tapes on
which assaulting battalions were to form up. The work had to be carried out
within a few hundred yards of the enemy on a dark night over badly shelled
ground, and took some four or five hours. In spite of all difficulties, the
tapes were laid in time, under artillery, rifle and machine gun fire, and with
